No Experience

You don't need experience in law enforcement to start.

The Huntsville Police Academy is paid, and your pay starts on day one. You'll train for 19 weeks in the academy, then spend 15 weeks in field training alongside an experienced officer before you work on your own.

From there, the work goes well past patrol. Huntsville officers run drones, work K-9, serve on SWAT, operate Bomb Unit robots and work inside the North Alabama Multi-Agency Crime Center (NAMACC).

The Huntsville Police Academy is GI Bill-approved. The discipline, teamwork and sense of mission you built in uniform are the same things a patrol shift runs on. You already know how to train hard, follow a plan, lead when it counts and back up the person next to you.

Life in Huntsville

Why Huntsville

Hear what our officers have to say.

Officer Charles Fann
Charles FannOfficer

Huntsville was voted as one of the top places to live and is poised to be the biggest city in Alabama in the next few years. Even with all of the expansion, Huntsville is still an extremely affordable place to live and hasn't lost its hometown feel. The community also loves all of its first responders. It almost feels like being a small town police officer; you just happen to be in a constantly growing metro area, and Huntsville police is expanding with it.

When it is hockey season, my family rarely misses a Huntsville Havoc game. My wife and I enjoy taking our daughter to the parks in the area or hiking in Monte Sano State Park. In the summertime, we spend several days at the Tennessee River swimming, skiing or fishing. I could not be more excited to be a part of this department at this time.

I am a firm believer in work hard, play harder. Luckily, it's not too hard to play in this city. Campus No. 805 houses multiple breweries and a speakeasy, or I can throw a few axes at Civil Axe or grab some amazing food at a Food Truck Rally. On a Friday or Saturday night you can find me downtown in the entertainment district, where the city blocks off the streets and you can enjoy everything our downtown has to offer, from live music to restaurants, bars, bistros and a cigar lounge.

There is nothing better than a Huntsville Havoc hockey game. If you are like me and prefer to be outdoors most of the time, check out Hays Nature Preserve where you can put a kayak into the Flint River, or the many trails and beautiful views on Monte Sano Mountain.

Huntsville may not be as big as most major metros, but it's growing rapidly. The work commute is around 20 minutes from areas outside metro proper. The housing market here is highly affordable, and you can easily get two to three times the square footage in a house compared to what you'd pay in other cities.

Our neighborhoods have incredible diversity. You'll meet people from all over the world who've moved here to work in the engineering and tech industry. If you're into science and technology, Huntsville is the best place to be. For recreation, Huntsville is a good place to hunt, and most of the time I'll barbecue with friends or enjoy the weather with my dogs.
